Strengths:

✓ Chipper
Prompto's noted as the mood-maker of the party, always ready with a quip or a joke to break the tension, even if the laughter's at his own expense. When others dwell on the admittedly dire state of the world, he's quick to remind them of the good things they still have right there: funny moments, delicious food, pretty girls. An avid photographer (or 'photog,' as he calls it, because he's a dork), he sees the wonder in the world and frequently gets the guys to pull over for selfies.

It's not all for his own sake. Prompto likes to take it easy and complains when the going gets tough, but he's sensitive to the needs of others and does what he can to ease their burdens. Getting the guys to engage in a little fun makes their world brighter, just for a moment, and isn't that a good thing?

✓ Supportive
The second a friend's down, Prompto's the first to their side. If the trouble's a physical threat, he'll leave the fighting to the others in favor of checking on whoever's hurt; when the plot gets dark, he's always there for a pick-me-up, but also to defend everyone's right not to be perfect and to make selfish or emotional choices. Here, he proves his strength. Prompto wouldn't know where to start sticking up for himself, but, no matter what he's up against, when a friend's heart is on the line, he doesn't back down.

In general, he cares for the weak and helpless, not just his friends. He stops to help hurt dogs and gets right down to kids' levels to make sure they understand that their point of view matters. After one of the party members is blinded, Prompto's the one to support him, putting his own needs aside to make sure he doesn't hurt himself as he adjusts to his injury--and he insists that their injured friend be allowed to continue with them, regardless of the danger. Instead of pushing others to do their best, Prompto's role is to understand weakness and allow it to exist without shame. Because he's always been the weak, clumsy, helpless one, he works with vulnerability like it's normal and assistance is a matter of course.

✓ Clutch Shooter
No one would call Prompto generally reliable, nor would they say he holds up well under pressure. There are moments, however, when he's the only one who can do something, when everyone else is down, when someone needs him--and at those times, he kicks ass. Whatever gap exists in the team, Prompto steps up to fill it. For all he acts like an undependable child, one can always count on Prompto come through when it counts.

Weaknesses:

✗ Fearful
For most of his childhood, Prompto kept to himself and tried not to be noticed, since it was difficult for him to relate to others and he didn't want to draw attention to his awkwardness or to the secrets, even as a kid, he had to keep.

These days, he's often hiding behind the others or desperately trying to work out what he should do to avoid putting his foot in his mouth, afraid of being hurt or embarrassed. Rejection is his greatest fear.

He's also scared of bugs, daemons, heights, dark places, cramped spaces, talking to pretty girls, talking to anyone he doesn't know, Ravus, Ardyn, sometimes Gladio, and probably a host of other things that may or may not go bump in the night. Prompto lives a life of fear and always has, terrified of being found out as 'different' and jettisoned from the tiny space he's clawed out for himself beside his friends. Losing them--or rather, the mere notion of losing them--drives him harder than anything else.

✗ Dependent
While he's more capable than he makes himself out to be, he absolutely relies on others practically and emotionally. He can't cook, he can barely drive, he doesn't know how to talk to people--he's a mess given human form.

Moreover, without other people, Prompto doesn't really know how to be. He constructed his personality out of nothing because a girl he didn't know wrote him a nice letter, assuming he and Noctis were already friends; all he's ever done is try to live up to that and earn that place at Noct's side. He defines himself by what he believes the people around him want and craves their validation. Without that, he's nothing. Empty.

✗ Distracted
He also just has hella focus problems and is easily led off-mission by a cool photo opportunity or a pretty lady. He's often humming, tapping his foot, whining about something irrelevant, playing on his phone, or fiddling with his camera. In the FFXV: Brotherhood anime, he ran the car off the road because he couldn't keep his eyes forward, constantly marveling at the scenery as he drove.

It wouldn't be such a big problem if he didn't do this in the middle of battle or while driving the car. As it is, it's annoying at best and dangerous at worst. Whoops.

Powers/Abilities:
✓ Combat: Prompto's a seasoned gunner, used both to hunting animals and daemons and waging battle against more human (or human-directed) forces. While he has the weakest constitution of his friends, he's fast on his feet and on the draw and can use any kind of firearm, including heavy machine weaponry and sniper rifles. He's also capable of stealth kills from behind.
✓ Magic: As a member of Noctis's guard, Prompto can draw on his magic to use special techniques that can weaken enemies or induce certain status effects. These techniques include lighting the immediate area with a daemon-weakening flare, creating a miniature black hole that sucks enemies towards it and holds them in place, a minor first-aid spell, and so on. Prompto's techniques tend to rely on his equipped weapons rather than natural elemental magic.
✓ Armiger access: He can also materialize or dismiss his equipment (or other items) from and to Noctis's JRPG hammerspace; this seems to grant him unlimited ammunition for his firearms as well.

Other Noteworthy Traits:

✓ Photographer's eye: The keen eye that makes him a good gunman serves him even better as a photographer. Prompto documents everything from cute animals to dramatic scenes to candid shots of his friends, and he likes no opportunity better than that for a selfie.
✓ Athletics: He's a speedy runner and a generally nimble, springy young man.
✓ Tech and vehicles: From the ease with which he adjusts to such disparate creations as Imperial Speeders, snowmobiles, and heavy weaponry, it appears Prompto has something of a knack for understanding and utilizing machines.

These Boots Were Made for Walkin'
When you remove these brown hiking boots and fail to restrain them (put them in a pack, etc) they will walk back the way they came, all the way back to where you first put them on, with more-or-less the same cadence and sounds. A sweet, yellow baby chocobo. Sunny, having not seen any other chocobos, assumes everything she meets is the same species as her and just looks funny. She's trusting and fearless and curious.

Cloudy
A hush shepherd that followed Prompto back to Keystone Station after the Amesta Forest exploration. His "day job" is to go out and look after shhhhhhhheep, but he comes home at sunset to make sure Prompto's nightmares aren't so bad. His big brother personality is steady and steadfast.

Animal Communication » points: 50 100
At this level, it's nothing close to words or complete thoughts, but rather an uncannily accurate ability to interpret their body language, even for animals he's never seen before. Like being able to understand what a baby wants even if all it's doing is crying and not giving you contextual clues.

Prompto can now understand animals' thoughts fully, as if they were having a conversation with him. He can't make animals understand human language in return, though.

Ice » points: 50 200
~~Weak ice magic; e.g. if Prompto were to breathe on a window, it might frost a bit. Mostly expressed in his breath and hands. Nice for cooling drinks, not good for much else yet.~~

He's now strong enough to freeze someone to the ground or form walls or generic ice chunks for defense/offense, half the size of a person. He can direct the ice's growth in a general way, though not finely enough to shape it.

Chapter 13: Out of the Dark

[Once all is said and done, the villain executed, "justice" meted out, anyone checking Room 13 will find it unlocked, just like all the other dead Champions' quarters.

Prompto's room doesn't look all that different from anyone else's. He didn't customize, there are no photos to hang on the walls. There are, however, two things on his bed: An old letter and The Fellowship of the Ring.

His chest is full of things now free for the taking, but stacked neatly on top are a series of letters addressed to his fellow Champions.]

COLORED PENCILS: A box of high-quality colored pencils. Good for producing quick pieces!
SCARF: A long, pink and purple scarf. It inexplicably makes you want to ride something.

CHOCOLATES: A bag of small, bell-shaped chocolates. The tag sticking out of the wrapper says "Physical Affections".
HAND SANITIZER: A bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitizer. It kills 99.99% of germs.

HEALTH SCANNER: A handheld electronic scanner that can immediately gauge the health of whoever it's aimed at. It glows green for impotence! Oh, wait, green causes impotence...

INFLATABLE SWIMMING POOL: A blue rubber swimming pool. Too bad it doesn't come with an air pump to inflate it with.

GLITTER CANNON REFILLS: Refill rounds for a glitter cannon. They'd probably break open if you threw them with enough force anyway.
WHISKEY: A bottle of whiskey. It tastes expensive.
HOLO NAIL POLISH: A bottle of holo nail polish. It's like a little galaxy for your fingers and toes.
FANCY LOTION: This lotion is very creamy and smooth, and includes shea butter. Smells like maple syrup.
FUZZY SOCKS: A pair of extremely soft socks. This pair is black.
CANDLE: A candle in a glass jar. This one smells like seafoam.
MODEST CLOTHES: A pair of full-length black pants and a loose-fitting white turtleneck. It looks like something from an incredibly repressed futuristic society.
FUZZY SOCKS: A pair of extremely soft socks. This pair is white.
ICE CREAM: The container says ice cream of the future, but inside is just a bunch of tiny frozen orbs of delicious creamy flavor.

Used/Junked

HOME SWEET HOME: On the arctic outerlands depicted within this snow globe, you can make out a mountain range, a railroad, what appears to be the corpse of a giant blue woman, and, in the center, a boxy, ugly compound that could be a military base or a research facility.
WHISKEY: A bottle of whiskey. It tastes expensive.
CHILDCHIME CHEESE WHEEL: A tiny wheel of cheese in a bright red wrapper. The label has a picture of a smiling cow.

'I mean, when you look at me, you wouldn't think that I'm anything but a fun-loving, happy-go-lucky joker. But that isn't the real me. Behind all the quips and laughs, I'm a mess of hang-ups.'

Prompto's obviously FFXV's cheerful comic relief character from the get-go. He's goofy, clumsy, whiny, doesn't know what to do with himself during the game's heavy moments, chipper to a fault, exaggeratedly reactive, sometimes annoying, and has hair like a chocobo's butt. He's the quintessential sidekick: the party's mood-maker, a nice guy ready with a laugh whenever it's needed, even at his own expense.

But all of this is the persona Prompto constructed so that he could have and keep friends. Beneath what he apparently thinks is a convincing front of jokes and good times, he hosts an inferiority complex the size of the sun, a deep-seated fear that his friends will leave him, and a need to give the people what they want. He's not naturally good with social interaction. He's uncertain of himself and has trouble relating to others. And a huge part of that was growing up lonely, as his adoptive parents were hardly home in his childhood, leaving an emotional chasm he was too awkward to know how to fill. Loneliness has left him terrified that the 'real him' wouldn't be worth anyone's time, that he's meant to live with that hole forever.

Once given the impetus to fill it, though--that is, a letter from the Oracle, so it wasn't even a resolution of his own making--he goes all-out. Sheer bloody dedication to the idea of being Prince Noctis's friend sees him through a multi-year transformation. He refashions himself from shy, stodgy loner to an affectionate loudmouth who can't sit still, who maintains a well-regulated diet and exercise regimen though he's long since reached his (admittedly shallow) goal. And that goes to show that Prompto's determination, for all his complaining, is never to be underestimated--particularly when it comes to his friends.

Running deeper than his insecurity and more true than his charming goofball persona is a streak of loyalty and compassion greater than Prompto himself understands. He's always the first to a downed friend's side and the quickest to notice something's wrong. He goes out of his way for children and injured animals--an affinity, perhaps, for those as weak as he perceives himself to be. A lifetime of observing others and adjusting his presentation to match the mood lets him see when his friends are hurting, and his own lack of pride--what, after all, does a loser like him have to be proud of?--lets him offer help so easily, so naturally, his prouder, more macho friends don't feel the sting. Everything Prompto does, he does to earn his place among the people he's lucky enough to call friends. Everything he does, he does to help.

Because of that, he lacks a certain kind of initiative on his own. His greatest struggle is to figure out what he wants, not what the people around him want of him. Before he figures that out, he's always looking to others for guidance and hiding behind them when he believes a situation beyond his ability--which happens real darn often. But once he realizes all he wants is to be with the others whether or not he 'deserves' that place--when he sets out to take that spot for himself with all the honesty and courage he has--he shows he has the resolve to stand on his own.

His whole life, Prompto's wrestled with the idea that he doesn't belong. For twenty years, he hid the barcode on his wrist despite not knowing what it meant beyond 'you're not one of them.' He knew he was from the enemy empire. He knew he was awkward, ungainly, without anything to offer that would make him worth befriending. But he knew he wanted friends more than anything. And when he found an opportunity to have them, he did everything he could not only to keep them, but to keep them well. He wants his friends to be happy. He'll do whatever it takes to make it so.

When the chips are down, when everything is falling apart around them, it's wimpy, awkward, bad-jokes Prompto who steps up to fill the cracks, to ease the burdens of those around him. It's Prompto who sticks up for Ignis's right to choose his destiny after an attack leaves him blind. It's Prompto who jokes with Noctis and forgives him as no one else ever does, rather than piling guilt and responsibility upon him.

He is that fun-loving, happy-go-lucky joker, here to lighten the mood. He's also that mess of insecurities, constantly groping for validation, begging the world for a reason to exist. But Prompto's capable of growth beyond expectation, most of all his own.

There's nothing he won't become to stand at his friends' side.

Abilities: Prompto doesn't have any magical powers of his own. Any special techniques he performs in FFXV can be attributed in part to borrowing Noctis's magic, as a member of his party.

- Photography: Prompto knows his way around a digital camera and its many options and settings. He's also fearless when it comes to getting that perfect shot and has taken selfies and action shots mid-battle.
- Firearms/combat: The game never explains where or when Prompto learned how to shoot, but he can use any firearm the game throws at him, including his default handguns, sniper rifles, machine guns, bazookas, and heavy Niflheim machinery. He's pulled off some ridiculous trick shots in-game. He's also capable of assassin-style stealth kills.
- Athleticism: Prompto's the fastest character in Noctis's party and has been running every day since childhood. What he lacks in strength and staying power, he makes up for with speed and agility.
- Machinery: He has a knack for picking up enemy tech and intuiting how to use it. It's not his greatest skill, but useful in a pinch.

Why?: From his very conception, Prompto was made to serve others. He was created as a tiny cog in a daemon-clone army; in his childhood, he re-shaped his entire body and personality in order to fulfill Lunafreya Nox Fleuret's request that he stand by Prince Noctis's side; and as an adult, he's always deferring to the other members of his party, looking to them for guidance and then responding as he thinks thinks they need. Putting him in a position of leadership and responsibility for shinki would stress him the hell out, but he's a great support.
Cause Of Death: After ten long years of darkness, thirty-year-old Prompto Argentum went down fighting daemons on the steps of Insomnia's ruined Citadel to buy time for Noctis Lucis Caelum CXIV to call on his ancestors' power to eradicate the Starscourge from Eos once and for all. While Prompto and his two brothers-in-arms were brave and skilled, the sheer number of monsters overwhelmed them, and they died just as dawn broke over the Kingdom of Lucis for the first time in a decade.

Prompto's earliest days are shrouded in mystery: What we know is that he was bred and branded to become a Magitek Trooper, one of the Niflheim Empire's ill-understood, daemon-powered soldiers. How he came to Niflheim's last standing opponent, the Kingdom of Lucis, is unknown, but he was taken in and raised by the Argentum family. Evidently, his parents were often out of town, and Prompto grew up a loner both at home and in school, where he had trouble connecting to others. He was also a heavyset child, which couldn't have helped. To protect the secret of his origins, he kept to himself and his camera, plodding through life without much to look forward to besides photographing cute animals around the city.

One cute animal turned his life around. Prompto found an injured puppy in front of his house one day, brought her in, and took care of her for a time, tending her wounds and making sure she was clean and fed. The dog turned out to belong to one Lunafreya Nox Fleuret, Oracle of Tenebrae and good friend of Lucis's prince, Noctis Lucis Caelum. When the dog returned to Lunafreya, she wrote a letter thanking Prompto for his assistance, assuming he was a friend of Noct's.

Prompto took the letter as a directive to become friends with Noct, who attended his elementary school. His first attempt to connect with the young prince ended in disaster, and an offhand remark of Noct's prompted Prompto to lose weight before he tried befriending Noct again. He spent the next few years working out and learning how better to talk to people until the beginning of high school, when, assuming Noctis wouldn't remember him, he pretended they'd never met and quickly squeezed himself into Noct's life.

Five years of best friendship later, Noct asks his advisor, his bodyguard, and Prompto to accompany him on a road trip out of the country to marry Lunafreya, as was stipulated in a peace treaty Noct's father was about to sign with Niflheim. Tragedy cuts their mostly fun almost-vacation horrifically short, when, before they even arrive in Altissia, the Niflheim Empire attacks and defeats the capital of Lucis, killing King Regis.

Prompto remains beside Noctis through their continuing trials as fugitives and rebels against the Empire, enduring not only his own hardships as the Empire continues to hunt them, but Noct's and the others' reactions to the losses that dog their party. He tries to shore his friends up and lighten the mood as much as he can, but it's a long, hard road of monster-hunting for money and fighting a losing battle against the Empire.

At the utter nadir of their spirits, the team is ambushed on a train by an Ardyn who can take others' forms. In the confusion Noctis attacks Prompto and knocks him off the train. For the next couple chapters, Ardyn holds Prompto captive so he can lure Noctis to the capital of Niflheim.

Once rescued, Prompto forgives Noct and then reveals his origins to the party. Their immediate acceptance despite knowing he was intended to be one of their enemies moved him deeply and cemented his place in their brotherhood. Shortly after, Noctis was absorbed into a magic crystal, leaving the rest of the party on their own for ten years.

More happens after that, but I think I may make Prompto's canon point pre-rescue, so that doesn't matter so much.

Character Personality: A few fans around Tumblr have been calling Prompto things like "sunshine child" and "my pure cinnamon roll son," and it's easy to see why. Even at a glance, Prompto maintains a playful, bouncy air in motion. He's constantly looking around, shifting his weight, constantly broadcasting his emotional shifts through expression, posture, and voice. He's one of the quickest of the FFXV party members to complain but also the quickest to joke, laugh, or sing. He brightens around pretty girls and goes nuts over puppies and chocobos and will snap a photo of anything--anytime.

He's also kind, desperately loyal, and deeply insecure due to his lonely childhood years and the psychological weight of hiding his origins--Magitek Troopers are branded with a bar code, so he had a physical mark to mask. Prompto calls the party members the only friends he's ever had, and shows his devotion to them by insisting they stay together even when, for one reason or another, they're bringing down the team; by always supporting them when they're down and out; and by simply saying it, always, through thought and action. Prompto is the result of a boy who literally reshaped himself because a girl he didn't know wrote him a nice letter implying he should be friends with the class celebrity. There's nothing he won't throw to the winds for his friends, particularly Noct.

Of course, he's also dorky and awkward. He talks a lot--constantly, really--and often says things most of the party knows better than to voice aloud. There's never any disguising what he's feeling, so he doesn't even try: If he's scared, he says so, and if someone in the party's going to cry, it's probably Prompto. He whines. He makes mistakes. He makes a lot of mistakes. He always means well, but, as he readily admits himself, he's not strong, smart, doesn't really know how to take care of himself, and often just gets in the way. In tense situations or when meeting new people, he usually defers to the other members of the party. He's clumsy with girls and doesn't seem to realize just how transparent he is.

But he goes out of his way for children and animal and always seems to know exactly what it is Noct needs emotionally, whether that's a break, a clap on the back, or just a chance to be a normal guy. He supports Ignis when, blinded, he insists on continuing to travel with the team. He's excited to meet Noct's fiancée for the first time. He pushes on bravely even when he knows he's the weakest, even when he's sure he's about to be left behind.

All he really wants is to earn his place. To be there for his friends. To walk tall beside them.
